#MYDATAMYRIGHTS: DEMAND U.S. PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES TAKE DATA PRIVACY SERIOUSLY

Online companies have been harvesting personal data for over a decade to help power behavioral advertising. Companies holding such extensive and personal information about all of us has led to massive data breaches, putting our security at risk, best illustrated in the Cambridge Analytica/Facebook scandal. This threatens our societies and electoral integrity- it must be stopped!

Everything from our health, our behavior, and our sexual orientation, to our racial profile can be determined from our history online. This data can then be leveraged to manipulate, marginalize, and condition us in ways that are extremely harmful and difficult to detect.

And yet, the United States is one of the world’s only democracies without a legal framework for preventing this kind of data collection and abuse. This is an unacceptable failure to protect the fundamental rights of people both in the U.S. and around the world. Together, we can change that.

Join us in demanding that U.S. presidential candidates take a stand against corporate exploitation of our data in the upcoming Democratic presidential debates.

Dear U.S. presidential candidates:

As U.S. voters and concerned citizens of the global community, we urge you to address how you will put an end to pernicious harvesting of personal data online. Data exploitation, which fuels microtargeting and enhances social division, undermines our rights to self-determination and privacy and threatens our democracy. Take a stand against the manipulation of human beings online for corporate gain by putting forward a plan to achieve comprehensive, rights-respecting data protection regulations.
